Excerpt:

“Why do you do this to yourself? Why do you think the worst of yourself?”

She lowered her head, resting her forehead against his chest. “I was raised this way,” she nearly whispered, but she knew he heard her because his arms came around her, his head lowered so that his lips were near her ear and he said, “Maybe it’s time you start raising yourself.” She understood his words. It was time she started taking care of herself, of her emotions, of her character. She couldn’t let the past shape her, but it had, and it was too hard to pull out those daggers of worthlessness her parents had driven into her. She knew now that they had been grooming her since childhood to feel inferior to them. The Devenshaw way meant conquer and thrive while rising to the top of the power ladder at all cost, but to be sure not to let anybody else usurp that power. Her parents had spent her lifetime making sure she never felt good enough for them, or powerful enough to break away from them. They needed to control her then, and it felt as if they still needed to control her now. Storm was right; she had to move beyond that, beyond this self loathing hatred, and become the woman she should be—the woman that he deserved and the woman that could live up to Darcy’s admiration. More importantly, she needed to stop being the mistress of her parents’ war and start being the mistress of herself.
